“New Approach” for Solo Shows taught by John Coppola
Finding your Personality, Style and Story using the the “New Approach”.
John Coppola combines his extensive directing experience which includes over 14 solo shows, along with his private coaching for network shows in HBO, Showtime, ABC, CBS, NBC, CW and Netflix and the Studio C’s “New Approach” to work with students to find their personal story and structure it to be universally appealing.
What is “The New Approach”?
Pioneered at Studio C and simply called The New Approach – this process is an innovative way to look at the craft of acting, which markets each actor according to his or her individual talent, assets, and personality. This methodology encourages actors to do more than become the role – it’s about what happens to the role, when they bring their complete selves – without any hindrances – to the work. The New Approach allows the students to work from the outside in, pulling from the well of their personality and life experiences to accurately portray the human condition in any role they perform. To achieve this deep self-awareness, students explore their inner “archetypes” and perform other exercises, which when applied to the craft of acting helps bring their auditions, performances, & career to a whole new level.
In 5 classes and private coaching, students will develop a 5-10 minute piece that can be further developed.

Client / Colleague Statements:
Brigid Brannagh – Actress (Army Wives, Over There, Angel, Kindred: The Embraced)
“My experience at Studio C was a great one — I went in looking for something more effective in an acting class, having taken so many that had only one thing to really offer – scene study. The exercises and more importantly the feedback from John on them , were incredibly honest, not fancy, not technical, no actor speak, just honest. A whiner is called a whiner , a drama queen is called out and a true moment – a true performance is recognized… I also saw that people who never worked went on to work regularly – as series regulars, on commercial and guest spots. I am always seeing people from class on TV and most of them were not working actors prior to Studio C – so that impresses me, be effective is what an acting class needs to be and this one is.”
Lee Abbott – Producer, Director, Actor, Writer (National Lampoon’s Totally Baked, Renovate My Family)
Studio C shattered my own personal Glass Ceiling. I had been “working” but th
e people and the lessons of Studio C were the force that finally brought me confidently into my full stride. I am deeply indebted to Johnny, and my fellow Studio C alumns.
Gregory Cascante – Producer (9 1/2 Weeks, True Romance, The Whole Wide World)
In a very competitive field, which has its share of under-qualified participants, you both are an oasis for the talent that elects to share in the journey to which you’ve invited them. Your understanding of the need to convey practical knowledge that results in work, coupled with your unique style of teaching the craft of acting, is the “best deal in town”. To boot, your new program of offering your students the opportunity to participate in short films is, in and of itself, a reason to be a member of the Studio C family. By offering them an opportunity to showcase their talent in a tangible format, you offer them a tremendous advantage in the furtherance of their careers. Congratulations on putting the pieces together so cogently, and effectuating your plan so efficiently and successfully.

TESTIMONIALS FROM HFF18 FRINGERS WHO TOOK THE WORKSHOP
Aaron Vanek- Fallen Stars at the Charity Sale
“As a first time Fringe producer, I would have been completely adrift without Matt’s workshop. The timing was great, coming before the official HFF talks. This gave me a tiny head start that I absolutely needed.
The information was broad, not too specific—exactly what I needed. Also, Matt is extremely nice and was happy to stay in touch with me afterwards, and still stayed in touch even though I didn’t use his theater for my show.
If you haven’t done Fringe before, I’d say this is REQUIRED ATTENDANCE. If you have done Fringe but want to do better, it should still be REQUIRED.
Thea Rivera, first time Fringer, first time producer of Nothing Bad: A Werewolf Rock Musical, sold out 3 of 5 performances, including the preview, received Pick of the Fringe and Encore Award. “The workshops really helped me brace for what I was in for, which turned out to be REALLY ambitious, and yet, still doable. I certainly look forward to more informative workshop opportunities!”
Peter Foldy - Penetration
“Coming to fringe knowing little about theater production, this workshop was a great, early overview that covered all the important, need to know essentials of getting a play on it's feet. It is conscience, comprehensive and highly informative. It helped me get a jump start on what needed to be done. Highly recommended!”

“A true embodiment of the word professional, Matthew Quinn will empower you with his detailed breakdown of each aspect of the production process for a Fringe show. This is an invaluable education which sets the foundation for a first-time producer to develop and present a successful show. In addition, Matthew creates a friendly atmosphere in which all of us shy, first-timers feel comfortable and confident enough to share our projects with each other and experience how fruitful and fun networking is.”
“Matthew was a very giving, very informative moderator with a wealth of information. Coming into my first Fringe, and not knowing the minutiae of how the festival runs, felt a lot more comfortable after this seminar that I can do this”
“I really enjoyed it and was very inspired. Matt covered a wide range of topics and concerns that were vital for a new fringe participant and was kind and extremely informative. I would do it again and DEFINITELY recommend it to any new comers like myself.”
